Lubrizol Participates In The TPE Thermoplastic Elastomers World Summit Conference

Barcelona, Spain, January 5, 2016 - The Lubrizol Corporation's Engineered Polymers business participated at the TPE 2015 Thermoplastic Elastomers World Summit Conference held in Barcelona from December 9-10. Romina Marin, research and development leader for the aliphatic and soft thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) platforms, presented a paper titled: Pioneering Aliphatic TPU Solutions for Top Performance. Dr. Marin revealed the latest aliphatic polymer developments resulting in improved soft touch (80 to 90 Shore A hardness) and hard TPU grades with improved staining and hydrolysis resistance compared to previous, standard aliphatic TPU, especially designed for electronic, wearables, automotive and sports applications.

Appealing aesthetics, optical clarity and light fastness are major drivers when choosing thermoplastic elastomers. Thanks to Lubrizol's UV-stable aliphatic TPU products, plastic engineers and designers can take advantage of soft to hard materials that do not yellow under light, heat and humidity, and moreover, combine durability and aesthetic properties, providing:

  • Cost-effective manufacturing (fast cycling, high flow, low density),
  • Flexibility, elastic/rebound and high-resilience properties,
  • Excellent weatherability and staining resistance, and
  • High heat and chemical resistance.

"Designers in wearables, automotive, electronics and sports markets are becoming more and more demanding about the aesthetics and surface finish they need, and this TPU can keep superior mechanical properties while retaining appealing aesthetics for years to come," states Romina Marin.

Lubrizol has a broad Aliphatic TPU (PearlthaneTM) portfolio for molded applications currently available that includes bio-based*, soft and hard TPU solutions and also allows a molded, durable part to last longer under the sun.
