The Cigar Advisor editorial team has released a new series of instructional videos called "Fan Mail: Your Cigar Questions Answered" -- responding to readers' questions about how to smoke cigars, as well as providing answers to the most commonly-asked questions that new cigar smokers tend to ask. For this edition, the editors answered four questions via video to demonstrate some tips on cigar storage, as well as highlight the difference between natural and maduro cigar wrappers.
Cigar Advisor Managing Editor John Pullo explains how "Cigar Questions Answered" came to be: "There are a lot of cigar enthusiasts -- many of them new to the hobby, but many who are not -- who have questions about how to smoke a cigar, or how to better their cigar smoking experience. Not everyone wants to be the one to ask; so we figured it's best we share the information with everybody, help the new guys learn, and maybe even solve a problem you didn't know you had."
"It's probably one of the most common questions I get from cigar smokers," says Gary Korb, Cigar Advisor Executive Editor. For this edition of Cigar Questions, Gary responds to a reader in New England who asked how to re-humidify dry cigars. "It's something practically every cigar smoker has had to deal with," says Korb; and in under 3 minutes, demonstrates his remedy for dried-out cigars. "There are a few ways to go about it, but the proper cure depends on how dried-out your cigars are," he adds.
Pullo was asked, "What does it mean when a cigar wrapper is described as 'toothy'?" John noted that the question came from a reader who had previously viewed the Advisor Cigar Review Panel video for the new Four Kicks Black Belt Buckle cigar, from Crowned Heads. "Many cigar wrappers show 'teeth,' but it's Cameroon and Broadleaf that show tooth most prominently," says John. In his Cigar Questions video, he explains why wrappers take on a "toothy" quality and shows what exactly a person should look for when examining his or her cigar. "It's part of the reason the cigar is savory and flavorful," says John.
"How do I keep cigars fresh during the winter?" That, says CA copywriter Jonathan Detore, is a question many cigar smokers are asking right now because they've noticed a change in the humidity inside their humidors. "Some extra care is required to keep cigars fresh, now that it's colder and drier," writes Jonathan -- and provides an accompanying video checklist of cigar storage tips and extra measures cigar smokers can take to keep their stash from drying out during the winter.
For the Advisors' 4th video, Editor at Large Tommy Zman Zarzecki profiles what he calls "The most common cigar question we get from people new to the hobby: 'Are maduro cigars stronger, and how are they different from natural wrapper cigars?'" Zman says a few misconceptions play into smokers' cigar selections, and those preconceived notions cause people to mistakenly shy away from maduro cigars -- and details them in his video answer.
