Advisory: Media Tour Will Unveil Audain Art Museum in Whistler

VANCOUVER, BC--(Marketwired - February 22, 2016) - On March 12, 2016, the Audain Art Museum will be opening its doors to the public. The contemporary building designed by Patkau Architects, embedded in a grove of spruce trees adjacent to Whistler Village, will be Canada's newest Category A museum.

The Museum's permanent collection donated by homebuilder Michael Audain and his wife Yoshiko Karasawa spans 200 years of art making on the British Columbia coast. It will include an extensive collection of early First Nations art works, Canada's leading collections of works by Emily Carr and E.J. Hughes, the works of Vancouver photoconceptualists including Stan Douglas, Rodney Graham, Jeff Wall and Ian Wallace, and a wide selection of prominent British Columbia artists.

Guaranteeing that there will always be a reason for a return visit, the Museum will offer temporary exhibitions from Canada and around the world, opening with a collection of Mexican Modernist works by Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros and José Clemente Orozco, known as Los Trés Grandes. A selection of works by Oaxaca artist Rufino Tamayo will round out the exhibition, under the direction of Chief Curator Darrin Martens.

Michael Audain, Executive Director Suzanne Greening, Architect John Patkau, Chief Curator Darrin Martens, Vancouver Art Gallery's Senior Curator Historical Art Ian Thom and Whistler's Mayor Nancy Wilhelm-Morden will be among the people on hand to tell the story.

Reporters and photographers are invited to Whistler to capture this story.
