Boston Marathon Names Language Access Network Official Medical Interpretation Contributor through 2018

COLUMBUS, Ohio, March 21, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Language Access Network (LAN) has been selected as an official medical contributor for the Boston Marathon and will provide its proven medical interpreting services by video and phone before, during and after the race for Limited English Proficient and deaf and hard of hearing participants. The Boston Marathon will be held Monday, April 18, 2016.

In 2015, more than 30,000 runners entered the Boston Marathon from nearly 100 countries creating a spectacularly diverse field of competition.

LAN is the first ever language services company selected to provide medical interpretation to Boston Marathoners. For the next three years, LAN will be the remote medical interpretation provider at the event.

“LAN’s extensive, proven experience in remote medical interpretation is a perfect fit for the Boston Marathon," said Chris Troyanos, medical director and coordinator for the marathon. “We are thrilled to have them as a partner and to provide an enhanced level of medical care to our runners when they need it most.”

LAN will provide video interpreting in the course’s two main medical tents. Using its HIPAA-compliant Martti™ (My Accessible Real-Time Trusted Interpreter) technology, volunteers will have instant access to medical interpreters in more than 250 languages, with nearly 60 available on live video. Along the marathon route, phone interpretation will be available at all 26 medical stations to connect runners with a trained medical interpreter who speaks their native language.

“The Boston Marathon is a premier international sporting event that draws runners from around the world,” said Jamey Edwards, CEO of LAN. “We are pleased to support the medical team and provide real-time access to certified medical interpreters to facilitate quick and efficient communication with an incredibly diverse set of professional and amateur athletes in their time of need.”

The marathon relies on the skills of 50 medical professionals and another 1,300 on-site medical volunteers to staff its medical tents and stations. A LAN client advocate will attend the Boston Marathon Medical Symposium prior to the event to train volunteers how to use LAN’s video medical interpretation technology efficiently and effectively. During the marathon, select LAN staff members will be on the ground in Boston to provide technical support and coordination.
