WASHINGTON, April 15, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- American Eagle Outfitters (NYSE: AEO) and the Student Conservation Association (SCA) today announced a unique "Buy One, Get One Tree" campaign designed to donate up to 100,000 trees in celebration of Earth Day.
For every pair of AEO Denim X and Flex Shorts purchased during the weeklong promotion, American Eagle Outfitters will donate $1 to have a tree planted through SCA, the national leader in youth service and stewardship. The promotion, which extends across AEO's more than 800 stores in the U.S. and Canada and online at ae.com, begins Friday, April 15th and runs through April 22nd. The campaign also provides AEO associates and customers with the opportunity to participate and help plant trees as part of SCA's volunteer events.
"Our 'Buy One, Get One Tree' campaign provides a rare opportunity to make both a fashion and an ecological statement," said American Eagle Outfitters Global Brand President Chad Kessler. "American Eagle Outfitters shares our customers' passion for the outdoors and preservation of our natural resources. We are always delighted to support SCA in its mission of empowering the next generation of conservation leaders."
"Buy One, Get One Tree" marks the ninth year of the AEO-SCA partnership, a conservation collaboration that has provided student volunteers with opportunities to protect and restore national parks, acquire hands-on career experience, and develop green solutions with national environmental leaders.
A key component of the SCA-AEO alliance is the annual placement of a specialized SCA Sustainability Fellow at American Eagle Outfitters' corporate headquarters in Pittsburgh. SCA Fellows have helped the company conduct a baseline analysis of its CO₂ emissions and measure the company's greenhouse gas reductions. AEO has a five-year goal of reducing its CO₂ emissions intensity by 20% by 2017.
"Since 2007, the generous support of American Eagle Outfitters has impacted the lives of tens of thousands of young people, who in turn have impacted so many others while strengthening our natural world," said SCA President and CEO Jaime Berman Matyas. "This Earth Day initiative is indicative of AEO's year-round commitment to the outdoors, and SCA is grateful for this ongoing partnership."
"Buy One, Get One Tree" adds a new facet to the partnership. Among their many environmental benefits, trees filter carbon dioxide, a major contributor to climate change, as well as other pollutants out of the atmosphere. They also give off oxygen, mitigate water pollution, and provide food and habitats for animals.
