United Way Launches The Social Equation and Miller Passing Torch in 2017

CALGARY, AB--(Marketwired - April 26, 2016) - Four hundred people gathered today as United Way unveiled The Social Equation, a formula for building a strong, successful and sustainable Calgary. It moves us from a city of 1.2 million people to a city of strong communities.

The Social Equation tells the story of critical social issues facing Calgarians and brings us together to create infinite possibilities for each other. United Way has identified 10 key facts that matter and 10 key actions Calgarians can take to be a bigger part of The Social Equation.

"With your passions driving your investments and actions, you've been part of The Social Equation for years," said Lucy Miller, President and CEO of United Way of Calgary and Area. "You've been making a significant difference in the lives of Calgarians."

In 2015, over 177,000 Calgarians accessed programs and initiatives supported by United Way. That means almost 500 people a day were positively impacted because Calgarians, business leaders and donors like you believe everyone deserves opportunities to thrive.

Here are just a few examples of what we've invested in, together:

• Innovative programs to help over 21,500 Calgarians meet their day to day needs, such as housing and food;
• 18,400 kids who got the chance to participate in mentoring, after school and recreation programs;
• Conflict resolution and communications skills training that helped 7,300 Calgarians learn how to build and maintain healthy relationships; and,
• 1,000 Voices, a Community Hub, connected 6,000 residents with services and resources, creating a healthy and positive place to live, work and play.

"In the past four years, I've seen the positive changes this city has made by coming together, being strategic and investing in critical areas that build on the strengths of individuals and communities," said Miller.

Miller and the United Way Board agree, The Social Equation is the critical formula for the city's continued growth and prosperity.

"Our city is so fortunate to have the leadership of Lucy and the United Way team," said United Way Board Chair, Sue Riddell Rose. "Her vision for Calgary and passion for achieving it inspires all of us to come together and act."

With The Social Equation in place, Miller announced she will be passing the torch in 2017 and Karen Young, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of United Way of Calgary and Area will be taking over as President and CEO in January 2017.

"I am confident we are set up for success," said Miller. "We will continue to work together and focus our collective efforts over the next eight months to accomplish what we need to do to move our shared vision for the city forward, now and into the future."
