Sagkeeng First Nation to Be First Community in Canada to Receive New Energy's Envirogen(TM) In-Stream Power Generation System

Canadian Government Awards BCIP Contract to New Energy Corporation Inc.

CALGARY, AB--(Marketwired - May 17, 2016) -  New Energy Corporation Inc. (the "company") announced today that the company was awarded a Build in Canada Innovation Program (BCIP) contract from Public Services and Procurement Canada (formerly Public Works and Government Services Canada). Under the contract, Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) will act as the federal testing department. The Sagkeeng First Nation community in Manitoba will be the first community in Canada to receive the company's new EnviroGen™ hydrokinetic power generation system, which generates electricity from a moving stream of water. This project is the first step in an initiative to offset electricity costs for elders in the First Nation community using renewable sources.

"Heating bills can be up to $300 to $600 per month, per household," says Sagkeeng Anicinabe Economic Development Officer, Jeff Courchene. "We want to help the pensioners of the community to offset these costs."

As part of the contract, New Energy will train Sagkeeng First Nation community members in the operation and maintenance of the patented EnviroGen™ technology, allowing them to become more energy self-sufficient.

"At New Energy, we strongly believe resilient economic development should be community-driven," says New Energy CEO, Clayton Bear. "Demonstrating a shared common purpose with the communities in which we operate allows us to create mutually beneficial relationships. Remote community members benefit not only from economic development resulting in decreased energy costs, but also through education and training in this up-and-coming technology."

New Energy's hydrokinetic turbine will be installed in the Winnipeg River that runs alongside the Sagkeeng First Nation community.

About New Energy Corporation Inc.:

New Energy Corporation Inc. is a Calgary-based and internationally-recognized renewable energy company dedicated to providing sustainable energy solutions based on its hydrokinetic turbines and related technology. The company has installed hydrokinetic systems in remote locations domestically and internationally, most recently in Nepal and Myanmar (Burma) to power a community and a school.

About In-Stream (Hydrokinetic) Power Generation:

In-stream (hydrokinetic) power generation is an emerging renewable energy sector, converting the energy within rivers, canals, and tidal currents into electricity. New Energy's power generation systems do not require dams or diversions, have minimal impact on the environment, and are easily deployed and removed. Power production from this continuous or predictable source of energy can be used as a base load energy source for remote communities, to supplement existing micro-grids, or as added capacity to a main grid.
