NCC to construct Central Station for the West Link

The Swedish Transport Administration has commissioned NCC to construct the
significant central station phase of the West Link project. The assignment
comprises an underground commuter train station and about 2 kilometers of
railway tunneling. The Transport Administration has budgeted some SEK 3 billion
for the phase in question.
The contract will be performed under a new model called Early Contractor
Involvement, ECI, which entails that NCC, in close cooperation with the
Transport Administration, will account for project planning and cost
optimization of the project. The order will be registered when the target cost
has been decided, which will be in late 2017.

“We are really positive to the fact that the Transport Administration has
decided to procure this project as an Early Contractor Involvement contract.
This cooperative format will enable us to integrate our organizations and create
joint understanding of the challenges that a project of this size involves. We
have previously worked in close cooperation on large-scale tunnel projects, such
as the City Tunnel in Malmö and the Stockholm City Line, which has given us
valuable experience in terms of sustainable technical solutions and the use of
leading-edge technology in civil engineering works,” says Svante Hagman,
Business Area Manager, NCC Infrastructure.

The total assignment comprises a railway tunnel from the E6 Highway in the east,
a rock tunnel through the Lejonet redoubt, an underground commuter train station
located immediately north of Gothenburg Central Station and the remaining
railway tunnel to the west up to the Gothenburg Opera House, a section of nearly
2 kilometers. A bridge over the E6 Highway may possibly also be included in the
project. The West Link is tremendously important to a growing, attractive and
sustainable Gothenburg and for Western Sweden, and will contribute in many ways
to developing the region.

It is estimated that the order will be registered after the target cost has been
agreed during the third quarter of 2017 in the NCC Construction Sweden business
area. Construction is estimated to start in 2018 and the project is scheduled to
continue until 2026.
