Bon Secours Health System Named 2016 Gallup Great Workplace Award Winner Recognized as “Great Workplace” by Gallup for Fifth Consecutive Year

Marriottsville, Md., May 25, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Bon Secours Health System has received the 2016 Gallup Great Workplace Award, an award created by Gallup to recognize organizations for their extraordinary ability to create engaged workplace cultures that drive business outcomes. Bon Secours was among 35 organizations from around the globe to receive the award during Gallup’s Spring Summit, held in Omaha, Neb., May 10-12. It is Bon Secours’ fifth consecutive year to receive the prestigious award. The health system also won Gallup’s Comeback Champion Award for its work and results with facilities that had performed in the bottom quartile of engagement in previous years.

“Bon Secours began looking strategically at employee engagement over ten years ago,” said Richard J. Statuto, president and chief executive officer of Bon Secours Health System. “It made sense, especially since the mission and values we espouse as a Catholic health ministry speak to the very the principles on which engagement is based.”

Recipients of the Gallup Great Workplace Award are part of an elite group of organizations that average a ratio of 14 engaged employees to one actively disengaged employee, which is more than seven times what Gallup found in nationally representative U.S. polling. This ratio is also more than 21 times what Gallup found in nationally representative polling in 142 countries worldwide.

Gallup’s rigorous scientific research links employee engagement to nine integral performance outcomes: customer ratings, profitability, productivity, turnover, safety incidents, shrinkage, absenteeism, patient safety incidents and quality. Companies with this winning combination have a competitive edge — organizations with highly engaged workforces can outperform their peers by 147 percent in earnings per share.

A highly engaged workforce, according to Gallup, can mean the difference between a company that thrives and one that struggles. When employees are engaged, they are passionate, creative and entrepreneurial, and their enthusiasm fuels business growth. These employees are emotionally connected to their company’s mission and purpose. When employees are not engaged, often they are indifferent toward their jobs, and will hold back the growth of a work unit and a business.

“The world’s top-performing organizations help lead the global economy by engaging their workforces,” said Jim Harter, Ph.D., Gallup’s chief scientist of workplace management and well-being. “Gallup’s Great Workplace Award winners understand and acknowledge the importance of employee engagement by making it a vital part of their organization while using it as a driving force to create real business outcomes.”

The Gallup Great Workplace Award, now in its 10th year, recognizes organizations that meet Gallup’s eligibility criteria. To qualify, they must demonstrate “an extraordinary ability to create an engaged workplace across teams, departments and locations,” based on employees’ participation in a survey, quantifiable business outcomes linked to engagement and other detailed evidence of commitment to and advancement of employee engagement. Engagement scores are rendered from Gallup’s 12-question survey (Q-12), which measures what matters most to employees. Gallup then correlates the data, linking engagement with outcomes in four key areas: strategy and leadership, accountability and performance, communication and knowledge management, and development and ongoing learning. All applications are reviewed and scored by a panel of Gallup judges.
