Zipcar’s floating service is expected to be available in Brussels from 14 September 2016. It will allow members the freedom to pick up and drop off a Zipcar at any location within a set geographical area, providing a convenient and cost-effective way to get around the city. Zipcar members will have exclusive access to a fleet of Peugeot 208 vehicles, a car well-suited to life in the city with easy handling, low emissions and room for up to five people.

The floating service will extend Zipcar’s market offering, which currently provides its nearly one million members across 500 towns and cities with access to a wide range of vehicles and the options of round trip and one-way services.

“The launch of our floating service in Brussels will mark the introduction of our most flexible car-sharing service to date. Having successfully operated a round trip service around the globe for the last sixteen years, we pride ourselves on our ability to innovate and lead growth in the sector,” said Zipcar International President Nicholas Cole. With global car-sharing members set to increase from 2.4 million in 2014 to 23.4 million by 2024, we are proud to offer a range of services that are tailored to meet the mobility needs of cities around the world.”

Zipcar’s announcement follows a press conference today, hosted by Pascal Smet, Minister for Mobility and Public Works for the Brussels-Capital Region, which introduced the concept of free floating car-sharing in Brussels and opened up the permit application process to car-sharing providers. The move is part of the city’s plans to tackle urban mobility and the capital’s heavily congested roads. Zipcar International President Nicholas Cole spoke with reporters at the conference, and highlighted Zipcar’s plans to support the needs of the city once permits have been granted.
