FULLERTON, Calif., June 20, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- A new book co-written by a child with autism and cancer, Fullerton Cares Autism Foundation is proud to support author and autism parent Sasha George in co-authoring a new children’s book about having hope, standing strong, and defeating the ultimate enemy, cancer, all set as a metaphor about zombies, baseball and the one hero who wins against the odds. “Strike One” is published by CreateSpace and released on June 18, 2016. Though not related, the two co-authors teamed up after getting to know each other through Fullerton Cares Autism Foundation’s vibrant community. Co-author and autism parent Sasha George, of Fullerton, was inspired after following Royce Felten, 10, of Riverside, personally fight with cancer at age 8. Now ten years old, co-author Felten is a first-time author who began writing short stories about topics he enjoyed, who found that he had a voice in his writing to make things enjoyable or humorous even in the most challenging moments, a tool that helped him in his cancer journey as well as his writing.
“Ms. Sasha taught me how to take an idea and make it into a dream come true,” says Felten about his collaboration. “She gave me a gift.”
Says George, “This was my first graphic novel in my series of children’s books and it was because Royce’s vision, storytelling and voice inspired me to want to go above and beyond for him.” Sasha George is the parent to Elizabeth 4, Daniel, with autism, 7, and Brianna, 21.
Fullerton Cares Autism Foundation facilitated the collaboration through their support of Sasha George as an identified author shining a light on stories of the struggles, challenges and obstacles that children with autism often face. Other books in her 6-book series include themes around friendship, acceptance, sensory challenges, trying new things, anticipated transitions during holidays and many more topics that help kids and families with autism better understand themselves and each other.
