DALLAS, June 30, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Texas Society of CPAs (TSCPA), a professional organization representing over 28,000 Texas CPAs, is hosting its Annual Meeting of Members to conclude the year-long celebration of TSCPA's centennial anniversary. TSCPA's 100 Years Strong Campaign has recognized the organization's many milestones over one century as a certified and licensed profession in the state of Texas since 1915.
"As we bring the anniversary celebration to a close, TSCPA thought it was only fitting to hold this year's meeting in the city where the idea for the organization was born," said Allyson Baumeister, CPA and TSCPA immediate past chairman. "The founding members first met in 1911 at the historic Tremont House Hotel in downtown Galveston. There the founders discussed ideas on how to establish and build the organization. It is impressive to think that discussion has led to 100 years and growing. It's an honor to be a part of TSCPA's history."
To kick off the meeting, TSCPA will host a Chapter Challenge Golf Event at the Moody Gardens Golf Course on Thursday, June 30. The member meeting will continue July 1-2 and will feature three keynote speakers including Jeffrey D. Mechanik, assistant director—nonpublic entities for the Financial Accounting Standards Board, who will provide an update on FASB and Private Company Council; Kimberly N. Ellison-Taylor, CPA, CGMA, vice-chair of AICPA, who is currently the global accounting strategy director for the Financial and Professional Services Industries for Oracle America; and Lloyd B. Potter, Ph.D., M.P.H., the Texas state demographer, who will address the current population trends.
"This past year has been full of 100-year anniversary celebrations, and I'm excited to conclude the year on a high note," said Baumeister.
Baumeister will officially transition her TSCPA chairman position to Kathryn Kapka, CPA, CGMA, who was elected to serve the 2016-2017 term. Kapka has been a full-time faculty member of the University of Texas at Tyler College of Business since 2010. She teaches financial and managerial accounting, auditing, forensic accounting and internal auditing courses. She holds BBA and MBA degrees from The University of Texas at Tyler. In addition to being a CPA, she is a certified internal auditor and a certified governmental auditing professional.
"The Annual Meeting of Members provides a great opportunity for our members to connect with peers and get a close-up look at the inner workings of our profession and seek opportunities within our organization," said Kapka. "I am looking forward to serving as TSCPA's chairman and kicking off the next 100 years of this great organization in Galveston!"
