NEWTOWN, Conn., July 6, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- In its recently released study "The Market for Multimission Communications Systems," Forecast International is projecting a $3.64 billion market over the coming decade. This expenditure will be spread among 26 programs to develop, acquire, or maintain multimission communications systems for militaries worldwide. In terms of individual units, the study forecasts the production of 332,105 multimission communications products during the next 10 years.
"With governments worldwide pruning defense budgets, FI expects multimission communications expenditures to begin to slow down over the next couple of years and then level off," said Greg Giaquinto, Forecast International senior market analyst.
The study defines multimission communications systems as systems that can be installed in multiple platforms and configured in more than one way. Such systems enable information to be shared among defense personnel and military weapons and systems. The market analysis cites the Joint Tactical Networking Center, Bowman Tactical Radio, and Single Channel Ground and Airborne Radio System (SINCGARS) as programs that will have a particularly significantly impact on the multimission communications market during the decade.
The Joint Tactical Networking Center has replaced the Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS) Joint Program Executive Office and is responsible for development and sustainment of JTRS software-based communications waveforms and network management. The JTNC will modernize existing software-based radio waveforms and develop new ones, and will test and certify industry partner tactical networking devices to ensure interoperability across the U.S. military services.
The U.K.'s Bowman Tactical Radio Program will buy a family of multimission communications combat radios for the British armed services. General Dynamics United Kingdom Ltd, prime contractor for the Bowman, chose Exelis and Harris Corporation to supply the bulk of the Bowman systems ordered by the U.K. (Exelis has since been acquired by Harris.) Forecast International projects that the British armed services will buy approximately 5,420 tactical radios under the Bowman program from 2016 to 2025.
The SINCGARS is a family of software-operated manpack, vehicular, and airborne radios produced by Harris. Among recent activity, in May 2016, Harris was awarded a $405.5 million contract to produce SINCGARS units for Morocco. The contract covers the production of not only the radios themselves but also ancillary items, spare parts, installation kits, training, and field support services. Contract work is expected to be completed in April 2021.
The study names Harris Corporation, General Dynamics, and Thales as the next decade's top three producers of multimission communications systems in terms of production value. Harris will lead with production totaling around $2.14 billion. General Dynamics and Thales will follow with, respectively, approximately $480.18 million and $214.95 million in production.
