NEW YORK, Aug. 22, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- In a blind tasting with no indication of country of origin, Chile triumphed in Drinks Business International Cabernet Masters competition last week. A panel of 5 Masters of Wine and 1 Master Sommelier awarded almost half of the medals to Chile. Out of the 109 medals awarded, Chile earned 45, leading in total medal count.
In total, Chilean wineries took one Master Trophy, six Gold Trophies, 15 Silver Trophies and 23 Bronze Trophies for single variety Cabernet Sauvignon from wine valleys around the country including Maipo, Cachapoal, Colchagua, Maule and Curico. Chile's sweep is especially impressive considering that all tastings were conducted blind by top UK wine professional; Patrick Schmitt MW, David Round MW, Keith Isaacs MW, Richard Bampfield MW, Patricia Stefanowicz MW and Clement Robert MS.
The highest accolade of the competition, the Master Trophy, went to Santa Rita's Casa Real. Other countries competing in the competition included New World producers from the USA, South Africa, Argentina and Australia, along with some Old World Cabernets from Italy, France and Spain.
"These results are thrilling as they highlight the fact that Chile can compete against the world's Cabernets at any price point," noted Executive Director of Wines of Chile USA Marybeth Bentwood.
More information about the competition is available here.
