Majority of Canadian Teachers Feel Networked Devices Make it Easier for Students to Learn

Computers, laptops, smartphones and related accessories are a shopping priority for students heading back to school

RICHMOND, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwired - Aug. 31, 2016) - Digital technology is now integrated into virtually every classroom across the country and that means that even primary school students are using everything from desktop computers to laptops, notebooks, smartphones and digital cameras for learning.

MediaSmarts' recent "Young Canadians in a Wired World, Phase III" study found that ninety-seven per cent of Canadian teachers say their school has some kind of networked devices in the classroom and the majority of teachers (79%) agree that networked devices make it easier for students to learn. Teachers are using these devices in their classrooms not only to introduce students to innovative content but also to empower students to make content of their own. Close to 40 per cent of teachers in the study said that they have had students create their own videos.

With the increasing use of technology in the classroom, it comes as no surprise that almost 35 per cent of Canadians students have a computer on their back to school shopping list and 30 per cent are shopping for cell phones, according to a study released from Initiative.

Other top items back-to-school shoppers are expected to purchase are portable memory devices, Bluetooth wireless headphones, software and accessories, according to Canadian retailer London Drugs.

Memory and Storage

These days, students are more likely to need a memory stick or portable hard drive than a #2 pencil and loose leaf paper. The Verbatim 2TB Store 'n Go USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive comes with the fastest USB connectivity available and is pre-installed with Nero backup software. You can schedule automatic backups by date and time, and secure the files by enabling password protection.

Smart phones are great for running learning apps and shooting video, but with limited storage and huge potential for loss of files if a phone is misplaced, many are opting for external storage devices for their phones as well.

The SanDisk 32 GB Connect Wireless Stick is the memory stick reinvented for smartphones, tablets and computers. It can be accessed wirelessly from your pocket, in your bag or across the room. Transfer large files, stream HD videos and music, and save and share photos, videos and presentations easily with classmates.

In classes and areas without Wi-Fi, the Transcend 64GB JetDrive Go 300 (for iPhone and iPad) and the Lexar JumpDrive M20 Mobile USB 3.0 Flash Drive (for Android) are designed for On-The-Go (OTG) enabled tablets and smartphones. The drive provides a storage locker for data so you never have to stop and delete files. You can explore, move, back up and manage photos, files and videos between the drive and your tablet, smart phone or computer without cables or Wi-Fi.

Computers

Students looking for the performance capabilities of a laptop and the ultraportability of a tablet should look at the Microsoft Surface Pro 4. It's not in every student's budget but when it comes to performance, quality and design, it's one of the best. Like many two-in-one devices, it functions as a laptop for writing papers and a tablet for watching videos and reading text books. The Surface Pen allows you to easily make notes and even write directly on webpages in the all-new Microsoft Edge browser.

Smartphones

Who needs a dictionary when you have the connected power of a smartphone in your hand? For Android users looking for a new smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge is everything students need to stay connected and balance a busy class schedule. Its extended battery life can last through the day and it offers fast wireless charging.

It is the first smartphone with dual-pixel technology for fast autofocus, less blur and a new advanced sensor for catching details in low light. With the option of adding an additional 200GB micro SD card, it allows you to save even more photos and files. Its water-resistant body means that it repels spills, splashes and even dunks.

Software and Accessories

It goes without saying that Microsoft Office is essential for students. The Home & Student 2016 edition for PC and Mac is the same suite of programs - Word, PowerPoint, Excel and OneNote - offered at an affordable student price. Having a personal printer is also affordable for most students now with options starting at as little as $49.99.

The distractions of an open classroom or workspace can have a negative impact on learning and productivity. Noise canceling headphones can help create the optimal study zone. With Bluetooth capabilities and exceptionally long battery life (20 hours), the Sony Wireless Bluetooth Headphones are a good option. The integrated omnidirectional microphone allows for clean hands-free calling as well.
