FiRe 2016 Conference to Introduce "Flow Computing"

SEATTLE, WA--(Marketwired - August 31, 2016) - In 2015, the Future in Review (FiRe) conference's annual CTO Design Challenge introduced "Pattern Computing" to the world for the first time, simultaneously launching a new research lab on the subject. This year's FiRe will see the introduction of "Flow Computing" -- a radical shift in moving static designs into the world of dynamic data flows. Flow Computing is intended to be integrated into all facets of processing big data, and will be one of several related groundbreaking topics under this year's FiRe theme, "The Power of Flows."

Larry Smarr, Director of Calit2 (a UC San Diego / UC Irvine partnership), will open the conference with FiRe Chair Mark Anderson by describing this revolution in computing architecture, augmenting today's von Neumann chips with a new generation of non vN chips optimized for low-energy, dynamic, real-time, and high throughput.

"All data is going to be Big Data," Anderson has written of this new age of computing, in his SNS Global Report, "and all big data is going to occur in flows. Whether you're looking at social networks or weather, genetics or e-commerce, flows are everything, and understanding and extracting patterns from these flows will be the primary task in computing over the next decade."

Smarr and Anderson will review progress in their jointly developed Pattern Recognition Lab (PRL), housed in Calit2's Qualcomm Institute. Together with the PRL's founding director, Ken Kreutz-Delgado, they announced its creation at FiRe 2015. The PRL has already acquired multiple non-vN processors and is optimizing a variety of machine-learning algorithms on them.
