In this talk, Crystal will describe the keys to developing a microservices application with lessons learned from companies like Uber and Ericsson. She will also describe how certain next-gen application areas--such as machine learning--are particularly well-suited to implementation in a microservices architecture versus a legacy application paradigm.

What: Jack Norris, senior vice president of data and applications at MapR, will present "A Data-First Approach to Drive Real-Time Applications." Jack will provide examples of how customers identified ways to simplify data streams in a publish-and-subscribe framework (for example, how focusing on a stream of electronic medical records simplified the deployment of real-time applications for hospitals, clinics, and insurance companies). Jack will also detail how a data-first approach can lead to rapid deployment of additional real-time applications as well as centralize and simplify many data management and administration tasks.

What: Crystal Valentine, vice president of technology strategy at MapR, will present "Using Parallel Graph-Processing Libraries for Cancer Genomics." In this session, Crystal will explain how the large graph-processing frameworks that run on Hadoop can be used to detect significantly mutated protein signaling pathways in cancer genomes. Crystal will describe techniques similar to those used in social network analysis algorithms and highlights an algorithm for the discovery of highly-mutated signaling pathways in cancer patients using a big data graph-processing library.

What: Ted Dunning, chief application architect at MapR, will present "Fast Cars, Big Data: How Streaming Data Can Help Formula 1." In this talk, Ted will demonstrate a high-fidelity, physics-based automotive simulator to produce realistic data from simulated cars running on the Spa-Francorchamps track. As Ted moves data from the cars to the pits to the engineers back at HQ, the result is near real-time visualization and comparison of performance and a great exposition of how to move data using messaging systems like Kafka.

What: Jim Scott, director of enterprise strategy and architecture at MapR, will present "Implementing Extreme Scaling and Streaming in Finance." In his presentation, Jim will outline the core tenets of a message-driven architecture and explain its importance in real-time big data-enabled distributed systems within the realm of finance. Jim will highlight financial use cases dealing with securities management and fraud.

Additionally, MapR will present in the Solutions Showcase on the show floor on Wednesday, Sept. 28 at 10:45 am. Dale Kim, senior director of industry solutions at MapR, will present "Fast, Scalable Analysis of Streaming Trade Data," where he will highlight an end-to-end streaming application and discuss how trades can be processed at high speeds, persisted, and visualized in a real-time data pipeline.
