Chief Electoral Officer's Report on Recommended Changes to the Canada Elections Act Tabled in Parliament

GATINEAU, QUÉBEC--(Marketwired - Sept. 27, 2016) -

• Earlier today, the Speaker of the House of Commons tabled Chief Electoral Officer Marc Mayrand's recommendations report following the October 19, 2015, general election.
  
  
• The report, An Electoral Framework for the 21st Century-Recommendations from the Chief Electoral Officer of Canada Following the 42nd General Election, proposes a number of recommendations aimed at building a more modern and inclusive electoral framework.
  
  
• The Canada Elections Act provides that after a general election, the Chief Electoral Officer shall recommend amendments that are, in his view, desirable for the better administration of the Act.
  
  
• This report is Elections Canada's third and final report following the 42nd general election. The others are the Retrospective Report on the 42nd General Election of October 19, 2015, released earlier this month, and the Report on the 42nd General Election of October 19, 2015, released last February.

"The amendments I am recommending are essential to bringing the Canada Elections Act into the 21st century, irrespective of any change Parliament may choose to make to the voting system," said Mr. Mayrand. "These amendments would make voting more inclusive and convenient for electors, improve the efficiency of election work and administration, and maintain the fairness and integrity that Canadians expect of their electoral process."

Elections Canada is an independent body set up by Parliament.
