The Mount Sinai Hospital Goes Live with Vital Images Deployment of a Unique Vendor-Neutral Platform for Clinical Research

Helping improve clinical outcomes and supporting population health

MINNEAPOLIS, Nov. 22, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Mount Sinai Hospital announced today that it is now live with a clinical research enterprise vendor-neutral archive (VNA) solution designed and deployed by Vital Images, Inc. (Vital).  The clinical research enterprise archive, aimed at supporting large-scale imaging research, or “big data,” incorporates an innovative data management concept proposed by David S. Mendelson, M.D. FACR, vice-chair of Radiology IT and senior associate of Clinical Informatics at Mount Sinai Health System.

The solution involves a unique adaptation of Vital’s Vitrea® Enterprise Informatics VNA technology for research and teaching in which multi-tiered access is created. Tier one employs an encryption engine that maintains the rich clinical metadata and images but de-identifies any direct linkage to the actual patient. Researchers and students can query the data without exposing protected health information (PHI). Tier two access is limited to clinicians who need to utilize patient-specific data.

“By collaborating with Vital Images to design this application, we expand our data capabilities to meet the needs of our growing research portfolio and patient population,” said Dr. Mendelson. “The investment in data systems, like the one Vital designed and deployed, is required to manage data and advance medicine.”

“We are honored to be able to work with Mount Sinai to launch this clinical research enterprise archive,” says Jim Litterer, president and CEO of Vital Images. “The new clinical research VNA provides a bridge between improving individual patient outcomes and long-term population health management, which is central to accountable care.”
