U.S. Geological Survey Successfully Begins Modernization of the National Water Information System with the Rapid Deployment of AQUARIUS Time-Series Software in the State of Alabama

The next generation of AQUARIUS Time-Series, the world's most powerful water data management platform, is now live across the Alabama offices of the USGS Lower Mississippi Water Science Center

VANCOUVER, BC--(Marketwired - December 20, 2016) - Aquatic Informatics Inc., a global leader in providing innovative software solutions for water data management and analysis, is announcing today that the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), North America's largest environmental monitoring agency, successfully deployed AQUARIUS Time-Series in the state of Alabama.

Alabama is first of the 50 states to migrate from the USGS legacy Automated Data Processing System (ADAPS) system to the modern AQUARIUS platform. Now, all USGS continuous water data in Alabama are stored and managed in AQUARIUS Time-Series to provide reliable, real-time information about surface and ground water, water quality, and meteorological conditions to citizens and local, state, tribal, and federal partners.

"Information about water is fundamental to the national and local economic well-being, protection of life and property, and effective management of the Nation's water resources." - USGS

Renowned for scientific excellence, the USGS is the most widely used provider of hydrological and environmental data, helping solve broad-scale natural resource problems across the U.S. and around the world. In this era of Big Data, a highly scalable platform is vital to provide the processing power required by hydrologists and scientists to complete very large data management tasks and solve highly complex water challenges. With this initial success in Alabama, the USGS has begun a once in a generation digital transformation, retiring their ADAPS system originally designed in 1985. By mid-2017, the national USGS Office of Water Information will rely entirely on a single AQUARIUS Time-Series system to efficiently centralize, process, and publish continuous environmental data collected from its 16,500 active real-time gauging sites across the United States.

"After 11 years of using AQUARIUS to correct continuous data and to build reliable rating curves for measuring water availability, we are thrilled to see the USGS migrating its National Water Information System to leverage the entire AQUARIUS Time-Series platform. In addition, the Agency will now benefit from all the advantages of Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (Amazon VPC), including performance and cost improvements," said Ed Quilty, President and CEO of Aquatic Informatics. "Within months, over 3,000 USGS hydrologists, water quality specialists, and scientists will rely on AQUARIUS Time-Series to efficiently manage continuous water and meteorological data for optimal data consistency and reliability nationwide."

"We've invested over three years of research and development, following a very agile and collaborative process with the USGS, to build our next generation platform," said Eric Dorgelo, Chief Technology Officer at Aquatic Informatics. "AQUARIUS Time-Series is today's most powerful system for managing water resources. Its highly scalable, flexible, and extensible architecture can meet the needs of the smallest to the largest environmental monitoring organizations. Agencies of all sizes all over the world are already starting to realize the benefits of using a single platform to produce timely, accurate, and defensible water information."

Highly Scalable

AQUARIUS Time-Series can handle so-called "Big Data" -- a high volume of data that arrives from thousands of sensors at a high velocity and in a wide variety of formats. There is no practical limit to the length of a time series and no limit to the number of time series. As monitoring organizations grow, they can rely on the same platform to support their larger networks.

Powerful, Flexible Processing

AQUARIUS Time-Series processes time series data in real-time. Computations can be simple, as with regression modeling or water balance accounting, or they can be highly complex, such as discharge derivation, evapotranspiration, or sediment loads. Calculations can be chained together to any depth, with different calculation paths for different periods of time to solve water problems today and into the future.

Unmatched Quality Assurance

Engineered to ensure the best possible quality data, AQUARIUS Time-Series is the only water data management solution that supports both manual and automated corrections of time series data in a fully audited and reversible manner. Intelligent quality control logic allows AQUARIUS Time-Series to review continuous data and suggest appropriate corrections to account for sensor fouling and calibration drifts. No raw data is ever altered or deleted. The automated audit trail tracks what, when, why, and by whom corrections were made for highly defensible final data.

Extensible & Configurable

Rich and modern web service APIs make it easy to integrate AQUARIUS Time-Series with existing systems, data acquisition tools, data repositories, and reporting tools. AQUARIUS Time-Series is highly extensible and can be configured to meet the unique requirements and practices of each organization.

AQUARIUS is the world's preferred software to acquire, process, model, and publish water data. Over 500 organizations in over 50 countries trust AQUARIUS to produce accurate water information in real-time. A modern design delivers the latest water science in an intuitive experience. Simplified data management, analysis, and information sharing enable better decisions for the equitable use, sustainable management, and protection of the world's precious water resources. Water professionals looking to better manage growing volumes of water quality or quantity monitoring data are invited to watch the 3-minute AQUARIUS video.
