LOS ANGELES, CA--(Marketwired - June 22, 2017) - New York City has joined a growing list of U.S. cities to ban the use of wild and exotic animals in circuses and other forms of entertainment with the passage of Intro 1233A. Chris DeRose, Last Chance for Animals president and founder issued the following statement in response:
"New York City's ban on wild animals in entertainment is long overdue. It protects the animals and it ensures the public's safety. It's a win-win situation for all, unless your business profits from the exploitation of animals. With Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus out of business and the largest city in the U.S. now passing this ban, it's clear we're reaching a new era of compassion for animals. Banning carriage horses should be next."
Intro 1233A passed New York City Council with a landslide vote of 43-6 on June 21, 2017. The bill titled Prohibiting the Display of Wild or Exotic Animals for Public Entertainment or Amusement now heads to Mayor Bill de Blasio's desk, and he has said he looks forward to signing it.
Once enacted, New York will become the largest city in the United States to outlaw the use of wild animals for human entertainment -- a significant achievement toward stopping the exploitation of animals.
"Even though Ringling Bros. is out of business, traveling shows like Carson & Barnes and the Shrine Circus continue to use elephants, lions, tigers and other animals who have been beaten into submission and forced to perform out of fear," said DeRose. "Last Chance for Animals will continue the fight against the exploitation of ALL animals in entertainment."
