NEW YORK, July 25, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- According to its annual study, the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS), the US and Brazil have long dominated the world of cosmetic surgery. According to it’s most recent study for cosmetic procedures completed in 2016, the USA and Brazil perform 17.9% and 10.7% respectively of the world’s 17,007,858 cosmetic procedures performed by plastic surgeons last year. But as impressive as these numbers might appear to be, which are the top countries that account for the remaining 71.4%?
The answers might surprise you.
“This year we had a record number of responses to our international study,” says ISAPS President Dr. Renato Saltz, “We got responses from plastic surgeons in over 100 different countries which enabled us to present the most detailed snapshot on cosmetic surgery trends around the world to date.”
One of the biggest surprises was Japan, Italy and Mexico ranking 3rd, 4th and 5th
places respectively “As part of this continued global upsurge in demand for cosmetic procedures, we’re seeing a lot of growth in countries that you might not necessarily think of as being a hub for cosmetic surgery,” says Dr. Saltz. “Japan, Italy and Mexico are all countries where plastic surgeons are investing significantly in the advancement of their aesthetic education and consumer demand is taking off. As a society who specializes in patient safety and education for aesthetic plastic surgeons around the world – this is a great trend to see!”
So which countries are fast becoming known for specific cosmetic procedures? The answer is: that depends on the procedure.
The top five countries performing the most breast augmentations are:
1 USA | 586,476 | |
2 Brazil | 434,775 | |
3 Russia | 134,214 | |
4 Mexico | 110,344 | |
5 Germany | 102,113 |
The top five countries performing the most body and extremities procedures are:
1 Brazil | 501,490 | |
2 USA | 483,054 | |
3 Mexico | 167,746 | |
4 India | 135,880 | |
5 Colombia | 103,821 |
The top 5 countries performing the most facial rejuvenation are:
1 USA | 526,020 | |
2 Japan | 310,054 | |
3 India | 201,020 | |
4 Brazil | 155,650 | |
5 Mexico | 86,471 |
“What these results tell us”, Says Dr. Saltz “Is that cosmetic surgery around the world continues to grow as patients become more educated about their options, and more and more plastic surgeons are realizing the importance of learning new and different techniques, which in turn provides better results and attracts more patients,” says Dr Saltz. “From everything that the results of this International Study shows, we’re not expecting to see a slowing of growth for cosmetic surgery any time soon. In fact I predict that we’re going to continue to see the opposite – more and more countries performing greater numbers of cosmetic surgeries. It will be interesting to see which countries are in the lead next year!”
Survey Methodology
The data on aesthetic/cosmetic surgical and non-surgical procedures performed in 2016 was tabulated with a questionnaire sent to approximately 35,000 plastic surgeons in the ISAPS proprietary database. Survey responses were received by plastic surgeons in 106 countries. ISAPS is the only organization that collects this type of cosmetic data annually on a global scale. The results were compiled, tabulated and analyzed by Industry Insights, an independent research firm based in Columbus, Ohio. For a copy of full results, please visit www.ISAPS.org.
