First collection of celebrated authors articles and speeches

NEW YORK, Aug. 15, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Bestselling author and medieval English historian Ian Mortimer has gathered selected articles and speeches on writing history and historical fiction into one collection titled, What Isn’t History? In this new collection, Mortimer explores the essential questions that face all writers of past events and time periods.

Though the meaning of history is personal, Mortimer discusses his views on determining what is and what isn’t history, as well as the levels of creativity historians can reach when writing about the past. According to Mortimer, ‘if a novelist can create an emotional impact when writing about the past, why can’t historians, especially when they are presenting their work as the truth?’

First published in 2008 as a scholarly article in the journal History, Mortimer has combined his subsequent writings and speeches on the topic into one volume aimed at guiding writers, and readers, through the intellectual scope of history.

In his own career, Mortimer pushes the boundaries of both literary form and historical methodology. In addition, he is a strong advocate for the importance of history to our modern world, both at a national level and on the community level. A fellow of the Royal Historical Society and a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, in 2004 Mortimer was awarded the Alexander Prize by the Royal Historical Society for his work on the social history of medicine.

In addition to the digital publication of What Isn’t History?, RosettaBooks also publishes Mortimer’s bestselling accounts of the life and times of Henry V, Henry IV and Edward III.
