SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 12, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Mocana, the leading provider of mission-critical security solutions for industrial control systems (ICS) and the Internet of Things (IoT), announced that it has verified the integration of its IoT Security Platform with the IoT cloud platforms of Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure IoT, and VMware. Mocana’s embedded cybersecurity software solutions give IoT device makers a military-grade alternative to open source security to secure IoT devices. Unlike certain open source security software libraries that cannot meet the stringent requirements of cybersecurity, Mocana’s software is certified for the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) FIPS 140-2 cybersecurity standard, making it suitable for industrial, enterprise, commercial and government applications.
“Mocana has established itself as a leader in protecting industrial control systems,” said William Diotte, CEO at Mocana. “Our recent integrations and partnerships with cloud providers will bring our proven cybersecurity solutions to the tens of billions of IoT devices that will be connected to the Internet. We are making it easy for developers to incorporate strong security into their IoT products and services.”
To connect an IoT device to these IoT cloud platforms, device designers and developers use software development kits (SDKs) provided by cloud providers to ensure that the device can connect to a virtual cloud server, cloud gateway or analytics platform. These SDKs typically use Transport Layer Security (TLS), a standard cryptographic protocol used to secure communications over a computer network or the Internet. Using open source TLS software has been known introduce security vulnerabilities into applications. For example, the Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) Database lists more than 250 vulnerabilities for OpenSSL, a well-known open source security software library. Companies that connect their IoT devices to one of these top cloud providers can now be assured that their IoT platform has military-grade protection.
In a recent test that took place in Mocana’s lab, the company verified that it’s IoT Security Platform is interoperable with the AWS IoT Device SDK, Microsoft Azure IoT Device SDK, and VMware Little IoT Agent (Liota) SDK. Mocana has successfully connected IoT devices to public and industrial clouds using Mocana’s software as the security layer. Mocana is also integrated with the GE Predix Machine to enable secure connectivity to GE Predix, the companies industrial operating system.
“Digital transformation is driving the adoption of IoT technologies that can measure the performance and status of billions of connected devices, said Vikrant Ghandhi, Industry Director, Digital Transformation, Frost & Sullivan of Frost & Sullivan. “Mocana’s IoT Security Platform ensures that IoT devices can be trusted and communicate securely to the public and industrial cloud platforms. Their verification of the interoperability and integration of their cloud to AWS, Microsoft Azure IoT, VMWare-based clouds, and GE Predix is a significant benefit for companies working with Mocana.”
To make it easier for developers to remove OpenSSL and replace it with a stronger security option, the company has created an OpenSSL connector for Mocana. This new software capability allows applications to continue using OpenSSL APIs to call cryptographic functions that are, instead, executed by Mocana’s crypto engine rather than OpenSSL’s engine. Replacing OpenSSL with Mocana’s software enables developers to the reduce risk associated with OpenSSL’s known vulnerabilities. This new capability is available now for Mocana customers that have upgraded to Mocana’s latest 6.5 version of its software.
