Verizon Makes Strides in Denver, Sweeping Mobile Performance Awards in New RootMetrics Report

Latest RootScore report reveals tight races and big shakeups in network speed and data performance in Denver

Bellevue, WA, Oct. 24, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- According to a new report from RootMetrics®, the independent source for real-world mobile performance comparison, Verizon sweeps the RootScore Awards in Denver, including outright wins for overall performance, network reliability, and call performance. The 2nd Half 2017 Denver Metro RootScore Report also reveals some shifts in the network speed and data performance categories, with Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile sharing both awards. Sprint held both awards outright in the previous half.

When it comes to data speeds in Denver, all four carriers record comparably fast median download speeds, ranging from 13.7 Mbps to 17.9 Mbps, allowing subscribers to download a high-definition TV show in five to six minutes. Median download speeds increased from the first half to the second half for all carriers except Sprint. Meanwhile, T-Mobile records the fastest median upload speed at 8.3 Mbps, meaning uploading a photo to social media would take four seconds on the network.

“The mobile performance race in Denver is like the wild west, with the carriers fighting to provide the best experience for subscribers,” said Annette Hamilton, RootMetrics director. “Close races in two of the most important mobile performance categories, network speed and data performance, suggest carriers are working to improve data speeds to meet new consumer demands in The Mile-High City."

This is the thirteenth time RootMetrics has tested the mobile networks in Denver and issued findings for the metro area. RootScore Reports provide a scientific, independent, consumer-focused assessment of mobile network performance.

Mobile Performance You Can Depend on

Reliability and speed are crucial to a consistently good mobile experience. RootMetrics indicates performance in these key areas with its network reliability category, a combination of results from data, call, and text tests; and its network speed category, which examines results across testing of data transfers, downloading email, and web/app tasks. Verizon takes the Network Reliability RootScore Award outright, an award the carrier has won or shared every round of testing since RootMetrics started testing in the area. Meanwhile, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon share the Network Speed RootScore Award.

Data Performance

The data performance category reflects how well networks perform in downloading and uploading data, performing email tasks, and downloading files that approximate loading typical webpages or apps. Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile share the top spot in the data performance category, which is an award Sprint had previously won outright. Notably, AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon all record the fastest median download speeds in Denver, while T-Mobile records the fastest median upload speed.

Call and Text Performance

Call and text capabilities are fundamental to a strong mobile experience. Call performance testing is based on how reliably each network can place and maintain calls, while text performance measures how reliably and quickly consumers can send and receive text messages. Verizon wins the Call Performance RootScore Award outright, while the text performance category results in a four-way tie for the third consecutive time.

Comprehensive Testing

To evaluate the mobile experience in Denver, RootMetrics conducted tests across all hours of the day and night from September 7 through September 15. Using smartphones purchased off the shelf at carrier stores, tests were conducted indoors at 64 locations and while driving 1,246 miles. For details about RootMetrics testing, see the methodology section of the RootMetrics website.
