Same day delivery has taken on increased importance this year as the number of procrastinators continues to increase. According to the National Retail Federation (NRF), 30 percent of shoppers won’t even begin shopping until December, and 76 percent of adult shoppers plan on making holiday purchases right up until Christmas-- resulting in a challenging shopping schedule that is complicated by the fact that Christmas lands on a Monday for the first time since 2006.
A Monday holiday means traditional shipping deadlines arrive earlier than normal. The latest shipping date for overnight delivery (at a premium price) is noon on December 22. This occurs before Super Saturday, one of the biggest shopping days of the year, kicks into gear. The shipping deadline also allows no room for error in the event of snow or bad weather, which can delay delivery. Aside from same day delivery, in-store shopping is a last-minute gifter’s only option to guarantee presents arrive on time, and this clearly doesn’t work when gift recipients are based in other cities.
