SEATTLE and AUSTIN, Texas, Dec. 07, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Heptio, founded by two of the creators of Kubernetes to accelerate the growth of the Kubernetes ecosystem and make the platform more accessible to businesses of all sizes, today announced a collaboration with Microsoft to ensure Heptio Ark delivers a strong Kubernetes disaster recovery solution for customers who want to use it on Azure. The companies will also work together to make the Ark project an efficient solution to move Kubernetes applications across on-premise computing environments and Azure, and to ensure that Azure-hosted backups are secure.
“Few real-world companies live solely in the public cloud,” said Heptio CEO Craig McLuckie. “It is incredibly important that the tools and practices they adopt when selecting their public cloud services work on-premises as well. Microsoft’s commitment to working with the open source community will not only benefit Azure customers, but strengthens the Kubernetes community.”
Heptio Ark helps manage disaster recovery for Kubernetes cluster resources and persistent volumes. It provides a simple, configurable and operationally robust way to backup and restore applications and persistent volumes from a series of checkpoints. With the Heptio-Microsoft collaboration, the two will ensure that organizations can not only backup and restore content into Azure Container Service (AKS), but that snapshots created using Ark are persisted in Azure and are encrypted at rest.
“I'm excited to see Heptio and Microsoft deliver a compelling solution that satisfies an important and unmet need in the Kubernetes ecosystem," said Brendan Burns, Distinguished Engineer at Microsoft and co-creator of Kubernetes. “We’re working with Heptio to ensure that the integration of Ark and Azure is a best-of-breed solution for backing up on-premise Kubernetes clusters into the cloud."
More information about the Heptio-Microsoft collaboration can be found in a blog post by Heptio CEO Craig McLuckie. McLuckie is announcing the collaboration now on stage during the keynote at KubeCon in Austin, Texas. You can meet with Heptio there through Dec. 8 at its booth, #S14.
