Lahaina, Hawaii, Dec. 13, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- “You could wonder for hours what flowers mean, but for me, their life itself, in all of its happy brilliance. We couldn’t do without flowers. Flowers help you forget life’s tragedies."-Marc Chagall

Russian-born Marc Chagall rose to artistic maturity in France, and as an early modernist was associated with several major artistic styles.  Yet he stands out as one of the most original artists of his age.  His dream-based imagery was revered by contemporary Surrealists, but rather than simply joining that movement, he chose to pursue his own individualistic path.  Much of Chagall’s work is rendered with an extraordinary formal inventiveness and a deceptive fairy-tale naïveté, a style that he maintained consistently throughout his long career.  His frequently repeated subject matter was often drawn from Jewish life and folklore — he was particularly fond of flowers and animal symbols.  Chagall was also an absolute master of color, leading Pablo Picasso to remark that after Matisse’s death, “Chagall will be the only painter left who understands what colour really is.” MLG is proud to exhibit unique paintings and original graphic works by Mark Chagall.

Angel Bay with a Bouquet of Roses (Nice et la Cote d’Azur, CS.30), a hand-signed lithograph full of richly deep hues will be on view and available for sale.  Chagall’s use of dreamlike elements set in the coastal landscape of the Cote d’Azur evokes a sense of quietude and beauty and is based on an original painting of the same image.

“People love mystery, and that is why they love my paintings.”-Salvador Dalí

Born in 1904 in Figueres, Spain, Salvador Dalí was one of the most important leaders of the Surrealist art movement. Dalí’s work is renowned for it's striking combination of bizarre dreamlike images and skilled draftsmanship.  Like no other artist of his era, Dalí thrust himself into the limelight and transformed himself into a living work of art.  He painted bewildering pictures in which every object held several meanings — and their interpretation is only possible by examining the work in detail.  MLG’s collection includes watercolors, wood engravings, lithographs and etchings. The largest Dalí painting in history can be seen at MLG in the Forum Shops, Las Vegas.

“The spectacle of the sky overwhelms me, I’m overwhelmed when I see, in an immense sky, the crescent of the moon, or the sun. There, in my pictures, tiny forms in huge empty spaces. Empty spaces, empty horizons, empty plains — everything which is bare has always impressed me"-Joan Miró

Joan Miró’s unique vision has often been linked to Surrealism as well as other 20th century art genres.  Yet more than any of his contemporaries, his iconography stands apart in forming a bridge between figurative and abstract imagery, and as such it has had a profound influence on succeeding generations. Though never officially a Surrealist, Miro’s artistic development was tied to Surrealist methodology.  Automatism, the exploitation of found objects, fortuitous accidents and other chance occurrences-and the attention to dream imagery-became important creative processes for Miró.  By combining these Surrealist techniques, which encouraged free-flowing material from his subconscious with his disciplined style of working and unique visual vocabulary, Miró evolved into one of the most prolific and innovative artists of the 20th century.

“There are painters who transform the sun to a yellow spot, but there are others who with the help of their art and their intelligence, transform a yellow spot into sun"-Pablo Picasso

Pablo Picasso is considered the greatest artist of the twentieth century, perhaps of all time. Born in Málaga, Spain, in 1881, he was a mastermind at displaying the multiple facets of objects in his artworks.  Although Picasso is steeped in this cubist tradition, his works are also closely linked to Surrealism – in both cubist and surrealist artworks, objects are broken up, analyzed, and reassembled in an abstracted form. Picasso was also the world’s foremost printmaker and his graphic oeuvre spans more than seven decades. His prints have been pulled from metal, stone, wood, linoleum, and even celluloid.  MLG offers a broad collection of this master’s work from the 1930s Vollard etchings to linocuts from the 1950s and the bawdy 1960s prints of his monumental 347 Series.

MLG invites you to explore a truly remarkable collection of fine art from these and other modern masters, on exhibit at their gallery in Lahaina, Maui located at Maui’s Marketplace at Lahaina on Front Street at Lahainaluna Road.
