WELLESLEY, Mass., Dec. 18, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The global market for printed electronics is anticipated to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 13.6% through 2022, according to a report by BCC Research. That growth will boost the market’s value from a 2017 total of $14 billion to an anticipated $26.6 billion in 2022.
The largest application of the printed electronics market is for optoelectronics, which focus on devices which source and control light and energy, according to the report Printed Electronics: Global Markets to 2022. While optoelectronics are forecast to see 12.3% CAGR through 2022, up-and-coming segments expected to see quicker growth include those for sensors (23.0% CAGR through 2022) and radio frequencies (18.5% CAGR through 2022).
Organic light-emitting diodes account for 47% of the printed electronics market. Other users are considerably smaller, including electrophoretic (16.2%), photovoltaics (9.0%), electroluminescent (7.4%), and sensors (6.3%).
Companies profiled in this report include Applied Ink Solutions, Cambridge Display Technology, DuPont Microcircuit Materials, Electro-LuminX Lighting, International Solar Electric Technology, Luminous Media, NanoInk, Power Paper, Siemens, Sumitomo Chemical and Toppan Printing, among others.
Research Highlights
- Screen printing is the most widely used printing technique, with growth driven by the manufacturing of displays and sensors.
- Challenges continue to be present in the use of electronic ink, although suppliers are formulating breakthrough functional inks and establishing high-volume ink facilities.
- One of the main benefits of printed electronics is that a production line can be configured to produce a particular product relatively easily. An additional advantage is the opportunity to use organic inks in the printing process.
“The key driver for the market is display technologies used in consumer products, especially for mobile devices and wearables,” said report author and BCC Research Senior Editor Michael Sullivan. “The printing techniques needed to produce the electronic circuits for these products is creating a scale in production growth, dominating the industry. The proliferation of display types as well as adoption volume are making the market a commercial success.”
The Printed Electronics Market Faces Number of Challenges
Although there are plenty of advantages to printed electronics, there are a host of disadvantages as well. Printed electronics currently cannot match the resolution of silicon-based electronics which are produced photolithographically. Overall, the metrics of print quality change as production moves from print to electronics—printed electronics will introduce a new set of metrics such as dot morphology, line continuity, and defects and layer registration.
