NHPCO Publishes Resource for Bereavement Professionals and those Caring for the Grieving

New edition of the Guidelines for Bereavement Care in Hospice created to support hospice and palliative care programs with bereavement services.

Alexandria, Va, Feb. 07, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- To support the work of hospice and palliative care professionals who are caring for people who are grieving a loss, National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization has published a revised and expanded edition of its professional resource, Guidelines for Bereavement Care in Hospice.

The Guidelines for Bereavement Care include information on assessment, scope of service, community collaboration, education and competency, an annotated bibliography, a professional competency assessment, and more.

Bereavement care is one of the core services provided by hospice under the federal Conditions of Participation from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Under these CMS regulations, hospices provide support to family members for 13 months following the death of a loved one.

People may not realize that many hospice and palliative care programs serve as valuable community resources offering support in response to a range of situations involving loss and grief.

“In publishing the new and expanded edition of the Guidelines, we’re committed to helping all hospice providers enrich their bereavement support programs, ensuring the highest level of quality and practice,” said Edo Banach, NHPCO president and CEO.

“In addition to more traditional support groups, hospices provide grief counseling to schools, support to people who have lost a loved one to addiction or suicide, outreach following natural disasters, and other services in response to community needs,” Banach added.

Developed with assistance and expertise of NHPCO members working in the field, NHPCO publishes a range of technical materials to help inform day-to-day practice.

Available for purchase from the NHPCO Marketplace, copies of the new Guidelines for Bereavement Care in Hospice may be ordered online at nhpco.org/marketplace or by calling 1-800-646-6460. The price for NHPCO members is $18.00 and the price for non-members is $36.00, making this an affordable yet invaluable resource to any professional library.

Additional information about coping with grief and loss is available free-of-charge from NHPCO's CarinInfo.org.
