Congresswoman Nita Lowey Marks Launch of Open Door Family Medical Centers New Sleepy Hollow Location

SLEEPY HOLLOW, N.Y., April 23, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Open Door Family Medical Centers, a national leader in the community health center movement, has launched a new health center in Sleepy Hollow, New York, at 300 North Broadway (Route 9). Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D-NY17/Rockland-Westchester), who has been an important and consistent advocate for federal funding of community health centers, toured the new facility with local officials on April 14 in celebration of the opening.

Open Door Sleepy Hollow is a 12,500 square-foot community health center offering primary and preventative medical care, family medicine, dental care, behavioral health care, and women’s health care, including prenatal care. The center also offers nutrition, wellness and patient advocacy programs. In addition, the new Sleepy Hollow location provides expanded facilities for the Phelps Family Medicine Residency Program and the launch of the General Dental Practice Residency Program that Open Door provides in partnership with New York Medical College and Phelps Hospital Northwell Health.

Open Door serves more than 55,000 patients each year throughout Westchester and Putnam Counties. The organization provides more than 300,000 patient visits at 14 locations, including six community health centers, seven school-based health centers and two mobile dental vans.

With recent changes in the national health care landscape, Open Door’s role as a highly accessible, Joint Commission and NCQA accredited Patient Centered Medical Home is more vital than ever before. The organization offers a sliding fee scale to low-income people who might not otherwise be able to afford heath care. Despite uncertainty in Federal funding, Open Door has been able to expand services through a mix of public and private funding. The organization opened a new facility in Mamaroneck, New York in the spring of 2017, and now offers expanded services in Sleepy Hollow.

Congresswoman Lowey commented, “Community health centers like Open Door are instrumental in providing health care to New Yorkers throughout the Lower Hudson Valley,” said Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D-NY17/Rockland-Westchester). “They understand the needs of local residents of all ages and they provide ready access to essential health care services, like primary and preventive care, that reinforce the well-being of entire communities. As Ranking Member on the House Appropriations Committee, I’m proud to have successfully fought to reauthorize the Federally Qualified Health Centers program and to have secured a $135 million increase in funding for community health centers in the FY18 omnibus spending bill. I will continue to make sure that health centers have the resources to meet the health needs of our communities.”

Congresswoman Lowey was joined in sharing remarks with assembled guests by officials including: Celeste M. Johnson, Associate Commissioner and Regional Director, New York Department of Health, representing Governor Andrew M. Cuomo; Assemblyman Thomas J. Abinanti; County Legislator Alfreda Williams; Sleepy Hollow Mayor Kenneth Wray; and Tarrytown Mayor Drew Fixell, among other speakers.

Open Door Sleepy Hollow will feature 18 medical exam rooms, four dental operatories and support facilities such as labs and counseling space. The new location will also offer program areas for the Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). A kitchen area has been designed to facilitate cooking demonstrations in support of Open Door’s nutrition programs. More information about Open Door is available at www.opendoormedical.org
