OTTAWA, April 26, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Canadian Steel Producers Association (CSPA) and its member companies today welcomed Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s announcement of significant new Government of Canada resources and regulatory changes aimed at preventing the unfair trade of steel in Canada.
“Building on modernizations to Canada’s trade remedy system now in force, we applaud the Prime Minister for continuing to appreciate and address the challenges associated with harmful trade,” said Joe Galimberti, President of the CSPA. “These important funding commitments and regulatory enhancements are vital to the sustainability of steel production in North America.”
The enhanced funding announced today will support 40 new officers dedicated to the investigation of trade related complaints and will enhance Canada’s ability to gather import data and monitor trade trends. These additional resources are critical to ensuring Canadian steel makers and steel workers are effectively protected from damaging steel trade activities.
In addition, the CSPA also welcomes the new country of origin marking requirements for steel products which will strengthen the Government’s tools for preventing transshipment.
“While we are very pleased with the measures announced today, the CSPA will continue to work closely with the Government of Canada to ensure ongoing vigilance in preventing harms associated with steel diversion and transshipment,” said CSPA Chairman Sean Donnelly. “We have a collective responsibility to ensure free, open and mutually beneficial trade in steel throughout North America and are committed to doing our part to guard against unfairly traded offshore imports.”
