Plant Prefab Completes New Prefabricated Residence in Palo Alto

6 module, 2300 square foot home will be installed in one day

RIALTO, Calif., May 01, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Plant Prefab, a leading custom home design and prefabrication company, today announced the installation of its latest residential project in Palo Alto, highlighting a building system that allows the construction of custom homes faster with less cost and construction waste than similar site-built homes.

The latest collaboration between tobylongdesign and Plant Prefab is a new 2,371 square feet, 4 bedroom, 3 bath residence on Waverley Street near Palo Alto’s midtown. It is a compact design that maintains a sense of openness on the first floor with tall ceilings in the stairwell and living room, utilizing large windows and sliding glass walls to prioritize natural light and access to outdoor living areas. The building is heated by radiant flooring and features thermally broken aluminum windows in combination with a high value insulation at the walls and roof to create an energy efficient envelope. The exterior materials include wood siding over a rainscreen which wraps the building, adding texture between smooth stucco walls.

Installed in only eight hours, the home replaces the outdated house on the property.

Recent data indicates that median home prices in Palo Alto hit an all-time high of $2.7 million last year, with tight supply and strong demand being the main drivers.

According to Steve Glenn, founder and CEO of Plant Prefab, people hoping to live in Palo Alto or surrounding areas crave high-quality homes that are healthy, energy efficient, use sustainable building materials and are of the highest quality, but the available supply of construction companies in the Bay area to build these homes is constrained and expensive.

“Plant Prefab is the first company focused on building extremely high quality, custom, sustainable homes based on plans clients develop with their own architects or that they select from our architect partners,” Glenn said. “By building off-site in parallel to the site work and in a controlled, all weather facility, we reduce the construction schedule by 50 percent or more versus a tradition site-based construction process -- and we dramatically reduce the noise and disruption to our client’s neighbors.”

According to Toby Long, CEO of tobylongdesign, “As design architects, we enjoy and appreciate the close collaboration and attention to detail of the Plant Prefab team. As leaders in the field, Plant Prefab builds some of the finest prefab modular projects in the country. Their location in California allows for efficient and effective transportation to our clients in the Bay Area, and their capacity and breadth of experience has allowed us to work with Plant on a wide variety of projects.  Their team is top-shelf, and Plant Prefab is one of the preferred fabricators working in the industry.”

It’s been a busy few months for Plant Prefab in the Bay Area. In March, the company installed two custom prefabricated residences in Berkeley and Napa that best embody their efficient approach. The modules that comprise the homes were constructed at Plant Prefab’s facility in Rialto, California and shipped to the build sites. The module comes to the site over 90 percent complete with all finished electrical and plumbing, millwork and appliances installed, paint and exterior cladding, and even tiles in the baths and kitchen.

In 2016, Plant Prefab opened a 62,000 square foot facility in Rialto, secured $3.4 million in Series A funding led by Obvious Ventures and shipped multiple homes throughout California. In the coming months, Plant Prefab will construct additional single-family homes for victims of the recent Napa-area wildfires, with special pricing for victims of the fire, including free initial site assessments, 50 percent off feasibility services, $5,000 in free upgrades and 5 percent off design/administrative fees.

Plant’s next two homes will be installed in Burlingame and Sebastopol in the coming months.
