The Organization of Canadian Nuclear Industries establishes the Martyn Wash Memorial Scholarships for Nuclear Engineering Students at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology

Pickering, May 17, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Organization of Canadian Nuclear Industries (OCNI) is pleased to announce the creation of the Martyn Wash Memorial Scholarships for 2nd, 3rd and 4th year nuclear engineering students at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT). The Scholarships will be awarded annually beginning in the 2018/19 academic year to two students in the Faculty of Energy Systems and Nuclear Science (FESNS) based on their academic performance.

The Scholarships will honour the memory of Martyn Wash who was the first president of the Organization of CANDU Industries (now OCNI) and who passed away suddenly on April 15 at the age of 62 in Cobourg Ontario.

Martyn Wash dedicated most of his 34-year professional career to championing Canadian nuclear energy capabilities. Following his graduation from Dalhousie with a degree in mechanical engineering and from Trent University with a degree in economics, he began his career working in power generation at Nova Scotia Power. After a two-year assignment at the Chalk River Laboratories doing post-irradiation fuel characterization, he joined Canadian Westinghouse in Port Hope as resident fuel specialist for the production of CANDU, PWR and BWR fuel assemblies. His work earned him the George Westinghouse Award. He continued in this role with Zircatec (now Cameco) rising to Vice President, Sales and Marketing, managing nuclear related projects in Argentina, Romania, China and Korea.

Martyn was President of the Organization of CANDU Industries from 2001-2008 growing it from 38 companies to a significant industry voice of 115 companies. Later, he joined Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd. to be the Project Lead for advanced fuel cycles using recycled Uranium and Thorium. Late in his career he consulted for Bruce Power, Westinghouse, Cameco, Fluor, Fallon Ultrasonics, Laker Energy, Nukem, EnerMotion, Amidyne, and NRCan. He never ceased being a passionate advocate for nuclear power and for the Canadian nuclear industry.

OCNI is proud to honour the legacy of Martyn Wash for all he has done for the Canadian nuclear industry and for his role in building OCNI into an important voice for the Canadian nuclear supply chain.   We hope that these scholarships will inspire more students to follow in the footsteps of Martyn.” said current OCNI President and CEO Dr. Ron Oberth.

“On behalf of our students, I extend heartfelt thanks to Mr. Wash’s family for choosing the University of Ontario Institute of Technology. The creation of these new scholarships is a wonderful way to honour Mr. Wash’s legacy and to reward our hard-working nuclear engineering students. I know our students share Mr. Wash’s commitment and passion to lead and influence nuclear platforms and technologies of the future,” said President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Steven Murphy, University of Ontario Institute of Technology.

“These two annual scholarships are offered by OCNI in memory of Martyn Wash and his lifelong commitment and passionate advocacy of nuclear energy and the environment.  We are proud that they will be awarded to encourage female and male students wishing to study in the field of nuclear engineering, who demonstrate leadership and a commitment to pursue similar goals” noted the Wash family.

The Organization of Canadian Nuclear Industries (OCNI) is an association of more than 200 Canadian suppliers to the nuclear industry that employ more than 15,000 highly skilled and specialized engineers, technologists, and trades people. OCNI companies design reactors, manufacture major equipment and components, and provide engineering services and support to CANDU nuclear power plants in Canada as well as to CANDU and Light Water Reactor (LWR) plants in offshore markets.
