COLUMBIA, Md., Sept. 24, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Mexico Fund, Inc. (NYSE: MXF) announced that the Board of Directors (Board) increased the quarterly distribution from $0.15 per share to $0.25 per share, representing an increase of 66.7% from distributions paid in April and July 2018, and an increase of 92.3% from distributions paid during 2017. Accordingly, the Board has ratified the continuation of the Fund´s MDP and declared a distribution of $0.25 per share to stockholders of record on October 17, 2018, which is payable in cash on October 25, 2018.
During the three months ended September 21, 2018, the Fund´s NAV per share returned 12.68%. Investors’ perspectives towards the Mexican equity market improved and consumer and business confidence increased. In this context, the Fund was able to realize sufficient capital gains to offset the prior year´s capital-loss carryforwards, and will be able to resume distributing investment income and realized capital gains beginning with this distribution.
The Board may amend or terminate the MDP at any time without prior notice to stockholders. Since the implementation of the MDP in September 2008, the Fund has paid a total of $22.60 per share in cash distributions to stockholders.
The ability of the Fund to distribute investment income and realized capital gains going forward is subject to change depending upon market conditions and the Fund’s returns, among other things. No guarantee can be made that future distributions will not contain all or a portion of return of capital. The amount of distributable income for each fiscal period depends on the aggregate gains and losses realized by the Fund during the entire year. Distributions may consist of net investment income, capital gains and return of capital, but the character of these distributions cannot be determined until after the end of the Fund’s fiscal year.
However, under the Investment Company Act of 1940, the Fund is required to indicate the source of each distribution to stockholders. The following table sets forth (A) an estimate of the source of the October 2018 distribution and (B) an estimate of the source of distributions for the current fiscal year:
