Weekend Bathroom Makeovers: DIY Tips

Toronto, Sept. 28, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- If you’ve got a weekend, a few do-it-yourself upgrades will help revive your bathroom space … with a little help from plastics.

Fill the Gaps –- Changes in temperature and humidity can cause cracks in the seams of your shower stall or around your bathtub as the walls expand and contract. Filing those cracks with a silicone or other plastic-based caulk provides long-term protection  — these caulks are very elastic and expand and shrink with your walls.  If you need to fix only a small area, try new single-use caulk packets that are made for smaller DIY projects.

New Floors in Two Hours –- Tired of your dated, cold, hard bathroom floor? Lay Canada’s hottest floors directly over your existing flooring in a couple of hours.   New generation luxury vinyl tiles and planks, (LVT), look like ceramic tile or marble but can be quickly installed without glue!  Luxury vinyl flooring is beautiful, warm underfoot and water friendly. You need to see it to believe it.

Lighten Up
–- Bright whites can lighten up a bathroom — but if you’re repainting with the same shade of white, it can be tricky to see exactly where you’ve painted. Try the new latex (a type of plastic) paints with special additives that actually roll on pink, allowing you to easily see your progress.  And then have fun watching it dry as the disappearing dye fades to reveal your shade of fresh white. Yes — watching paint dry can be fun!

Add a Regal Touch — Consider adding plastic crown molding in the same or complementary shade of white, which adds an attractive and inexpensive architectural detail. Moldings made with plastics are a great choice in bathrooms because they resist moisture, rotting and mold.  Since they bend a bit, they’re also easier to install on slightly uneven walls and ceilings.

Play a Little — Add a whimsical touch with vinyl decals that are available in a variety of shapes, colours, sizes, and patterns.  They stick to almost any surface and are moisture resistant, making them ideal for the bathroom.

A little paint, a little elbow grease, a little time — and your bathroom will be ready for Monday morning, thanks to these handy DIY products made possible by plastics.
