Lexia Releases White Paper on How Teachers Can Ensure Equity in Literacy Education

BOSTON, Oct. 16, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- While the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) has put forth criteria for providing all students with a high-quality education that will prepare them for college, career, and life success, teachers need the capacity to effectively implement the new criteria. Dr. Suzanne Carreker, the principal educational content lead at Lexia Learning, a Rosetta Stone® (NYSE: RST) company has authored a new white paper that provides insights into how literacy educators can build their capacity as well as their confidence in ensuring an equitable literacy education.

Titled “Equitable Literacy Education: The Transformative Impact of Building Teacher Capacity and Confidence,” the white paper discusses the difference between equity and equality, why equity is important for literacy and the impact of teacher capacity and teacher confidence in literacy education. In addition, it explores three experiences that, with proper support, build teacher capacity and confidence:

1. Analyzing data from high-quality assessments.
2. Delivering instruction within a high-quality curriculum.
3. Using technology effectively to differentiate instruction.

“Teacher capacity in literacy instruction can be defined as the ability, or the possession of knowledge and skill, to advance literacy achievement,” said Carreker. “At some point, all teachers are going to encounter content that is unfamiliar to them or students whose difficulties in learning to read seem intractable. Continuing to build their capacity and confidence enables literacy educators to rise to the challenge of such encounters.”
