SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif., Oct. 17, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Cal Poly’s California Cybersecurity Institute today announced its Internet of Things (IoT) Lab donated by Arlo and Bugcrowd. The Lab, which will be unveiled in a virtual ribbon cutting on November 2, is the first part of a two-year program providing research, develop products, and provide real-world, hands-on training for students through the California Cybersecurity Institute (CCI) at Cal Poly and ultimately help organizations prevent and remediate cybersecurity issues.
The following day, November 3, the Cal Poly Cybersecurity Institute will host a Bug Bash event. The Bug Bash will take place in the IoT Lab — which will be set up as a mini city to replicate a real-world environment for hacking — will bring together top Bugcrowd researchers and students from Cal Poly’s White Hat club for a full day hackathon to surface vulnerabilities on a number of Arlo products, including Arlo Pro 2, Arlo Security Lights, Arlo Baby and more.
“Bugcrowd and Arlo’s donation of the Internet of Things Lab enables the CCI to provide more vital cyber training to white hat hackers who defend California from cyber attacks,” said Jimmy Baker, Director for Industry Outreach at the CCI.
With an increasingly interconnected world, crime has moved onto gaming platforms, smart TVs, vehicles and other home appliances. The sophistication of cyber criminals has expanded into exploiting the multiple vulnerabilities inherent in this new era of the Internet of Things (IoT). The IoT lab supports cybertraining to identify, isolate and remediate critical vulnerabilities on any device connected to the Internet.
“As the leader in crowdsourced security, we take the responsibility of building our Crowd of cyber defenders and deepening their skills very seriously,” said Ashish Gupta, CEO, Bugcrowd. “With a growing number of unfilled cybersecurity positions around the world, it’s incumbent on us to engage the next generation. Our work with Cal Poly and the launch of the IoT Lab is an important part of this mission.”
The CCI is a robust, multi-agency effort to protect California from future cyber threats through training and research for government, academia, military, law enforcement, first responders and private entities. The CCI’s digital range differentiates its training program from others by creating immersive, scenario-based exercises on issues including next-generation cloud computing, anti-human trafficking, healthcare, critical infrastructure and even vehicular vulnerabilities. Bugcrowd believes and supports this mission and has made Bugcrowd University content and experts available to the CCI.
“Protecting the privacy and trust of our users is of utmost importance at Arlo,” said Tejas Shah, SVP and Chief information technology, Arlo. “Our bug bounty program with Bugcrowd enables us to gain more visibility into our vulnerabilities and remediate them faster. The IoT Lab is valuable as it will provide real-world learning opportunities for students, helping train the next generation of cyber defenders – the future of cyber security.”
