The Ordre des ingénieurs welcomes the appointment of Me

MONTRÉAL, Oct. 22, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec sincerely congratulates all of the MNAs who were appointed to the new government’s cabinet and especially M^e Sonia LeBel, Québec’s new Minister of Justice and Minister responsible for the administration of legislation respecting the professions.

In fact, the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec had the pleasure of meeting with M^e LeBel last summer and is ready to work with the new Minister on advancing important issues for the 64,000 engineering professionals in Québec,” stated President Kathy Baig, Eng., FEC, MBA.

The OIQ’s first priority in the coming months will be to end the trusteeship decreed by the previous government in 2016. The rationale behind the decision to place the OIQ under administration was that it would speed up the OIQ’s transformation. The OIQ has been transformed, as demonstrated by the results presented in the organization’s most recent annual report. This transformation represents a profound and lasting change of culture at the OIQ, which is now focused on prevention and supporting engineers in their professional practice. More specifically, the OIQ has strengthened its public protection mechanisms considerably and consolidated its governance and its financial situation.

Another major priority for the OIQ in the coming months will be to expedite the modernization of the Engineers Act, a law that essentially dates back to 1964. Bill 401 tabled by the National Assembly last June specifically concerned this issue. However, the bill died on the Order Paper when the provincial elections began. The OIQ hopes that the new government will be able to reactivate it soon and adopt an updated Engineers Act during its term.

Finally, the OIQ would also like to congratulate engineer MarieChantal Chassé on her appointment as Minister of Environment and the Fight against Climate Change.
