SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 20, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- MobiledgeX, provider of mobile edge developer services, previously announced an agreement to partner with SK Telecom (NYSE: SKM), the largest mobile operator in South Korea, to enable a new generation of connected devices, content, and experiences, creating new business models and revenue opportunities leading into 5G.
Since the announcement, MobiledgeX and SK Telecom have been working closely together with both device makers and application developers and will demonstrate the results of the rapid collaboration in the SK Telecom booth at Mobile World Congress (MWC 2019) in Barcelona this February.
“In the 5G era, Mobile Edge Computing will be a key technology for next-generation industries including realistic media and autonomous driving,” said Park Jong-kwan, Vice President and Head of 5GX Labs of SK Telecom.
The first demonstration is with 1000 realities, a leading augmented reality company that recently won the grand prix prize for best CESA IoT Startup, as well as for the best VR/AR startup held at the European VR/AR congress. The computational intensity of 1000 realities augmented reality glasses software requires a latency of less than 33 ms for operational viability, which is only possible when running on MobiledgeX and SK Telecom’s infrastructure. 1000 realities’ software helps industrial workers perform their day-to-day tasks by delivering relevant data depending on where they are and what they are looking at. Performance intense computer vision algorithms responsible for spatial mapping and positional tracking cannot be run on light, low computing smart glasses, especially if the smart glass user has to be localized on large scale industrial premises.
“Access to Edge is ‘make or break’ for our business to work and scale, without the need for an on-premise local data center,” says Piotr Wojcik, CEO, 1000 realities. “Access to existing mobile operator infrastructure and edge services via MobiledgeX allows us to seamlessly scale our business faster and without the need for additional effort.”
The demonstration shows the strength of operator collaboration in the future application enablement space. The 1000 realities application is already operational on Deutsche Telekom’s Network edge with the help of MobiledgeX and was seamlessly integrated into SK Telecom’s network. This is an example of a better, faster, more efficient business approach for both developers and mobile operators, a behavior that previously created the existing smartphone market.
“I am very pleased that we were able to move so rapidly from partnership to technical realization. The ability to show the strength and value of operator collaboration by rapidly deploying next-generation applications globally is very important as we build the global community in the new edge and 5G services space,” says Eric Braun, Chief Commercial Officer of MobiledgeX.
“Based on this partnership, SK Telecom will continue to drive technology innovations to provide customers with differentiated 5G services,” said Park Jong-kwan, Vice President and Head of 5GX Labs of SK Telecom.
