“The Mother’s Day retreat is an unforgettable weekend that absolutely radiates with positivity,” said Lena Welch, age 19, a brave, beautiful girl from empowerHER. “Every year I leave reminded of how strong I am, and grateful to have been exposed to so many new role models and friendships I wouldn’t trade for the world. The retreat offers something for all age groups and interests and I’d highly encourage everyone to attend who has the opportunity.”
For most young girls like empowerHER founder Cara Belvin, their mother is the most influential figure in her life and the loss of this maternal compass leaves daughters feeling isolated and “different” from their peers. The Mother’s Day Retreat was designed to help these young girls pay tribute to their mothers, find peer support and mentorship from those that can relate to this loss and simply remind them that there is still so much joy to be found in life. From yoga classes and make-up tutorials to dance parties and storytelling, the agenda is uniquely designed with a young girl in mind. A highlight of the weekend includes the final Soul Circle on Mother’s Day morning to encourage healing and connection, and most importantly to remind the girls they are not alone in their grief. This powerful shared experience bonds the young girls, volunteers and chaperones as they close out the retreat and honor their mothers on a particularly difficult day.
For the second year in a row, the Seaport Hotel has served as a generous partner. From ample meeting space to a coveted dance floor and unlimited access to facilities, the hotel overlooking Boston harbor provides an exquisite backdrop for the weekend. The girls enjoy a five-course meal in a luxurious dining room and the hotel staff goes above and beyond to ensure the meeting space, guest rooms and dining experiences help bring some comfort and joy as the girls come together to celebrate their mothers and connect with the empowerHER community.
“We are grateful to support empowerHER in their mission to serve this deserving community of young girls,” said Leah Malin, Director of Catering, Seaport Hotel. “It is an honor to host the Mother’s Day Retreat weekend for the second year in a row and play a small part in helping remind these young girls of their strength, despite a devastating loss. We look forward to continuing our work with empowerHER as we strive to serve as a valued partner to leading non-profits throughout the region.”
