Mobility technology leader Bombardier Transportation has won a new contract to supply an additional 40 BOMBARDIER MOVIA metro cars to Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (DMRC). The new cars will increase DMRC’s existing fleet of MOVIA metro cars from 776 to 816 to make it one of Bombardier’s largest metro fleets in the world.
Sudhir Rao, Managing Director, India, Bombardier Transportation said, “Since 2007, in partnership with Delhi Metro, we have been supporting Delhi National Capital Region’s ambitious expansion plan and we are proud to move safely around two million people every day in India’s capital city with our trains and signaling solutions.” He added, “These additional trains will bring additional capacity to Delhi Metro’s rail network and they will be delivered from our state-of-the-art manufacturing sites in Vadodara.”
The high degree of localisation at both the Savli and Maneja sites is in line with Delhi Metro’s indigenous procurement plan that encourages local manufacturing and the Indian government’s ‘Make in India’ program by delivering rail vehicles, products and solutions that are developed locally, for both Indian and foreign markets. Bombardier is one of Delhi Metro’s largest rollingstock suppliers and with over 120 km of line in operation for Delhi Metro’s Lines 5, 6 and 7, is also their largest signalling solutions contractor. Recently, Bombardier commissioned the last major section on Delhi’s first fully automated metro Line 7 with its advanced BOMBARDIER CITYFLO 650 communications-based train control solution to support safe and reliable automatic train operations.
The new modern, high-capacity MOVIA metro vehicles for Delhi Metro integrate some of the world's most advanced mobility technologies such as the BOMBARDIER MITRAC propulsion and control system and the BOMBARDIER FLEXX Metro 3000 bogies, an extremely robust and reliable design specifically adapted to suit Delhi’s infrastructure. These new vehicles will accommodate up to 740 more passengers and once configured into eight-car trainsets, will carry as many as 2,960 passengers providing much-needed capacity increases on three of Delhi’s main metro lines.
After more than five decades of investment in India, Bombardier Transportation employs around 2,200 people at its sites in India. This includes the railway vehicle manufacturing site and bogie assembly hall at Savli near Vadodara, Gujarat and a propulsion system manufacturing facility at Maneja, near Vadodara, Gujarat. There is also a Rail Control Solutions Centre for project delivery, product engineering and Information Services hub near Gurugram Delhi NCR, a Traffic Control and Management System (TCMS) Centre in Vadodara, and an Engineering Centre in Hyderabad. In addition to Delhi, Bombardier has been supporting the Mumbai rail ecosystem since 2002, by delivering and maintaining the Traffic Management system (TMS) for Western and Central Railways and around 100 trains of 12 cars each are equipped with Bombardier’s MITRAC propulsion systems moving safely 7.8 million people who travel daily on Mumbai suburban rail network.
