DNV GL Healthcare’s 2019 Symposium will be held at the Hilton Cincinnati Netherland Plaza, November 6-8. Founded in the Cincinnati area just over a decade ago, DNV GL Healthcare has become the fastest-growing healthcare accreditation organization in the nation working with more than 500 hospitals in the United States.
Among the keynote speakers at the event will be Denise Cardo, M.D., Director of the Division of Healthcare Quality Promotion at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Dr. Cardo will discuss recent successes her agency has had in battling hospital-acquired infections and bacterial resistance to antibiotics, as well as the agency’s “AMR Challenge” initiative that involves healthcare providers nationwide.

Another Symposium highlight is a 90-minute panel on the impact of precision medicine to the hospital business. Many standalone facilities and healthcare systems have begun adopting precision medicine programs as a way to improve their diagnostic capabilities and create new revenue streams. Bobbie Ray-Sannerud, Ph.D., director of the precision medicine program for DNV GL’s parent company in Norway, will lead the discussion, which will include several high-ranking U.S. hospital executives.
The Symposium also features more than 32 breakout events conducted by hospital leaders from throughout the United States. Topics to be covered include:
Workplace Violence
- Jim Sawyer of Seattle Children’s Hospital will discuss best practices to prevent gun violence in hospitals, as well as addressing the recent surge of homeless patients in urban hospitals.
- Susan Russell of Singing River Health System in Pascagoula, Miss., will discuss reducing violence in the hospital emergency room – often a flashpoint for dangerous incidents.
- Robert Loseman of the University of Missouri Health Care will discuss how to implement a fully functional workplace violence prevention program in 18 months.
Patient Safety And Quality Of Care
- Paul Lambrecht of Inspira Health Network, Woodbury, N.J., will discuss implementing a comprehensive patient safety management system.
- In separate presentations, Mariana Gattegno of Piedmont Healthcare, Atlanta, Ga., and Ginger Glory and Marianne Klaas of Cherokee Nation Health Services in Tahlequah, Okla., will discuss using the ISO 9001 quality control system to improve patient safety.
- Barbara Beverage of AnMed Health, Anderson, S.C., will discuss melding patient safety, quality and accreditation requirements into a single mission, rather than continuing them as siloed projects.
- Rebecca Katt of HonorHealth, Phoenix, Ariz., will discuss implementing crucial organizational and cultural changes when a hospital is required to undertake a 10-day corrective action plan to address a defect that jeopardizes patient safety.
Behavioral Health
- Kristin Bies of Kaleida Health, Buffalo, N.Y., will discuss keeping patients with behavioral health issues safe in an acute care hospital setting.
- Sheri Johnson of Samaritan Health Services, Corvallis Ore., will discuss suicide prevention in the hospital setting, with a particular focus on neutralizing potential ligatures.
