DALLAS, Oct. 23, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Today, four High Point University students spent the day shadowing Cynt Marshall, Dallas Mavericks CEO and HPU’s Sports Executive in Residence, as part of an externship during the Mavericks home season opener against the Washington Wizards at the American Airlines Center in Dallas.
Students learned what it takes to operate and lead an NBA team by observing managers across departments, from ticket sales and finance, to marketing, human resources and player relations.
“The hands-on experience showed me the machine that is the Dallas Mavericks organization and how each department plays an integral role in preparing the Mavericks for every game,” said Parker Murphy, an HPU senior majoring in sport management. “The team goes beyond just the leadership, players and coaching staff, and I am thankful to High Point University for providing this amazing opportunity.”
From offering experiences like this externship, to working with a sport management class and participating in panels, like the upcoming All Star Panel HPU will host on Nov. 4, Marshall is a valuable mentor for students.
“Having access to shadow Cynt Marshall gave me an idea of what it’s like to be CEO for a day,” said Sylvanna Schiefele, an HPU senior sport management major. “This externship has shown me that my potential can far exceed anything I previously imagined, and I look forward to applying this mindset to my future.”
The opportunity is one of many that HPU provides students through its Access to Innovators program, a justice league of global entrepreneurs, leaders and change agents which includes Netflix Co-Founder Marc Randolph, HPU’s Entrepreneur in Residence; Apple Co-Founder Steve Wozniak, HPU’s Innovator in Residence; ABC News’ Byron Pitts, HPU’s Journalist in Residence; and Scott McKain, best-selling author, business consultant, trainer and HPU’s Corporate Educator in Residence.
