Heijmans in joint venture with Blackwell

Blackwell's core activities are civil engineering and earthmoving. The company also conducts a wide range of activities in earthworks, road works and hydraulic engineering. Blackwell, based in Essex, is primarily active in Great Britain. The company's net turnover in 2001 amounted to £ 43.7 million and demonstrated good profit-making levels. Blackwell employs 354 people.

The joint venture is to purchase an operational soil remediation system, with the expectation that this system will be able to remediate at least 80,000 tonnes of soil per year for the next five years.

Expansion of international activities
The joint venture fits in with Heijmans' objective of increasing turnover to EUR 5 billion in 2006 and the ambition to become a leading player on the European market. Heijmans' goal is to achieve 20% of its total turnover abroad in 2006. The British market offers good potential for expanding Heijmans' soil remediation activities. This market is expected to increase by 15% in the coming years.
The growth in the demand for chemical treatment, thermal decontamination and immobilisation technologies is caused by the increasing number of contaminated soil sites and the expected increase in restrictions on disposal. The British market also offers opportunities for consulting, due to developments in environmental legislation and its strict enforcement.

The joint venture provides Heijmans with access to this market in collaboration with a trusted partner. Heijmans has worked successfully with Blackwell in previous years.
