Heijmans widening A2 at Deil - Total value around € 85 million

Widening the A2 Culemborg-Deil begins in February. Limiting traffic disruption and promoting good traffic circulation play an important role during execution of the operations. This is an approach which is also being used by Heijmans in constructing the A2 Eindhoven ring road. Heijmans expects to complete the A2 Deil project in August 2010, more than four months ahead of the final date of delivery.

Circulation
Expanding the A2 Culemborg-Deil is one of the three sectional projects with which the Directorate General for Public Works and Water Management wants to improve traffic circulation on the A2 between Deil and Everdingen. The contract comprises a widening to 2 x 4 lanes in both directions, of which widening from 3 to 4 lanes is still an option. The procedure for realising this option has not yet been concluded.
Ultimately the motorway needs to be widened to 2 x 5 lanes. Space in the central island is now being created for this in both directions.

Scope of the work
Because of this expansion three existing viaducts must be demolished and rebuilt: at Geldermalsen, Beesd and Culemborg. The bridge over the Linge will also be demolished and reconstructed. The tunnel under the N327 at Geldermalsen will be extended. At the Deil (A15/A2) interchange a new underpass and a flyover will be constructed to handle traffic from the A2 towards Tiel / Nijmegen. At Beesdsche Veld a new ecoduct will be constructed with a cycle path. The service areas at Bisde and Lingehorst must be modified. New noise barriers will be erected at a number of locations. Heijmans will be installing lighting and crash barriers along the entire length of the motorway stretch. There will be cameras near the Deil interchange, and Heijmans will also be installing traffic signalling, ramp metering and road signage.

From Heijmans Infra this project will be controlled by the new Heijmans Infra Integrated Projects group, HIGP in its Dutch acronym, responsible for design, tendering, preparation and execution of comprehensive contracts in infrastructure. Also involved are the following groups operating within Heijmans Infra: Road Engineering; Concrete Construction & Hydraulics; Technology & Mobility; and Infra Technology. Through this collaboration a more efficient approach and more efficient logistics can be achieved; thanks to the central governance from HIGP, Heijmans removes the task of coordinating activities from the principal.
